UAB Falls to Charlotte in Three Sets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Playing in its second of three-straight road matches, the UAB volleyball team fell to Charlotte, 3-0, on Sunday at Halton Arena.
UAB (11-10, 3-4 C-USA) was led offensively by Abby Carlile, who picked up 12 kills in the match. The sophomore added four digs and three blocks on the day and now has 213 kills for the season, leading the team in the category. She is averaging 3.04 kills per set and is hitting at a .271 clip.
Sophomore setter Shelby Holderfield picked up 34 assists against the 49ers to bring her season total to 740. She entered the match third is Conference USA in assists, averaging 10.28 per set. Brianna Muller got the start at libero for UAB and registered 13 digs, bringing her season total to 201.
Charlotte (13-10, 3-4 C-USA) was led by Reeana Richardson, who picked up 12 kills against the Blazers. The 49ers out-blocked UAB to a tune of 9-5 and kept the Green and Gold offense off balance most of the match.
"Credit to Charlotte for an awesome match today," head coach Amy Pauly said. "They are a tough team to beat and we just couldn't find any rhythm with our game. I'm always proud of how our team battles and never gives up. We'll get back in the gym on Tuesday and keep working and getting better."
Set One: UAB 15, Charlotte 25
The 49ers got out to an early 6-3 lead with the help of a 5-0 scoring run before stringing together a 4-1 run to make it 12-8. Charlotte used another 5-0 run later in the set to extend the lead out to 17-9 and closed the match on a 3-0 run to win 25-15.
Charlotte hit .500 in the opening set and held UAB to a .031 hitting percentage.
Set Two: UAB 22, Charlotte 25
The second set was back-and-forth with neither team gaining much of an advantage until Charlotte put together an 8-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Blazers battled back late and cut the 49ers lead to one at 22-23, but Charlotte got the final two points off a kill and an attack error to win 25-22.
Set Three: UAB 22, Charlotte 25
It was a tight battle in the third set as the teams were tied 17-17 late. However, Charlotte used a 7-1 run to make the score 24-18. The Blazers fought off match point four times and cut the lead to 24-22 but the 49ers earned the last point and prevailed 25-22 in the third and took the match 3-0.

UAB will close out its three-game road swing on Friday, Oct. 19 at Middle Tennessee before coming home for three-straight matches beginning with North Texas on Oct. 21.
