Blazers Take Winning Streak North to WKU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team puts its four-game winning streak on the line Thursday at 8 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Bowling Green, Ky., to face WKU at Diddle Arena.
The game will be broadcast live nationally on CBS Sports Network with John Sadak and Jordan Cornette on the call.
UAB (13-5, 4-1) enters the week having won eight of its last 10 games after downing Louisiana Tech 74-62 on Saturday for its fourth consecutive double-digit victory. Senior forward Chris Cokley scored 24 points and added seven rebounds to lead four Blazers in double figures.
Cokley continues to serve as the offensive catalyst for the Blazers with an average of 17.8 points and 9.2 rebounds. The Savannah, Ga., native ranks sixth in Conference USA in scoring, third in rebounding and has the second-most double-doubles of anyone in the league with seven.
Zack Bryant scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high five rebounds against Louisiana Tech and was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week on Monday. Bryant averaged 15.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists last week en route to earning his honor from the league.
Sophomore Nate Darling hit a pair of three-pointers on Saturday and scored 10 points and ranks third on the team with 10.6 points per game. The Halifax, Nova Scotia, native has made a team-high 31 three-pointers and is shooting 52.9 percent from beyond the arc over his last three games.
WKU (13-5, 5-0) won its sixth straight game Saturday with a 73-63 victory at Charlotte. The Hilltoppers are tied for first place with Middle Tennessee atop Conference USA and have won six consecutive games. WKU has not lost since falling 75-72 at home to Belmont on Dec. 19.
Senior guard Darius Thompson leads WKU with 15.6 points and 5.0 assists per game, while senior forward Justin Johnson adds 13.8 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Taveion Hollingsworth (12.8 ppg), junior guard Lamonte Bearden (12.3 ppg) and senior guard Dwight Coleby (11.8 ppg) also score in double figures for the Hilltoppers.
UAB and WKU will meet on the hardwood for the 36th time in school history when the two teams battle on Thursday. The Blazers own a 22-13 in the all-time series that dates back to the 1980-81 season. In the most recent meeting, WKU defeated the Blazers 76-64 last season at Diddle Arena behind 26 points and 14 rebounds from Johnson. In the first match-up last season in Birmingham, UAB used 19 points and seven rebounds from William Lee to down WKU 72-54. Overall, UAB is 7-9 all-time in Bowling Green and will be in search of its first win at Diddle Arena since 1998.
