Blazers Look To Remain Undefeated In C-USA

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team returns to Bartow Arena on Friday to take on Charlotte at 7 p.m. and then welcomes FIU on Sunday, Oct.1 at 1 p.m.
UAB (8-9, 2-0 C-USA) opened conference action 2-0 for the first time since 2011 when it won its first seven conference matches. The Green and Gold went on the road and knocked off Middle Tennessee 3-1 and UTEP 3-1 on its way to an undefeated start.
Petra Silic lead the Blazers against Middle Tennessee with 13 kills, two service aces and two blocks. Victoria Young and Erika Zembyla also had strong games against the Blue Raiders with Young scoring 12 kills and four blocks and Zembyla tallying 11 kills, two blocks and one service ace.
Against UTEP, it was Gabby Deshotel who came up large racking up 17 kills, nine digs and two service aces. Deshotel also scored five blocks against the Miners. Freshman Shelby Holderfield earned her second double-double of the season tallying 37 assists and 10 digs en route to the Blazers four set win.
"It was maybe the best weekend our program has had in a long time," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "The team played well, played together and that was the most important thing. That being said, those games are in the past and we need to focus on playing two very talented teams this weekend."
Charlotte (14-4, 1-1) opened conference play at home by beating Marshall in four sets but lost to Western Kentucky in straight sets. FIU (1-6, 0-1) dropped its conference opener at home to North Texas in three sets.
UAB leads the all-time series with Charlotte 19-10 but is 1-6 against FIU.
