Blazers Fall 3-1 To Charlotte

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team fell to Charlotte by a score of 3-1 (19-25, 16-25, 28-26, 21-25) Friday night at Bartow Arena.
UAB (8-10, 2-1) dropped its first conference match of the season after winning its opening two C-USA matches on the road. Charlotte controlled the action in the first two sets winning each handily by scores of 25-19 and 25-16.
After the break however, it was a different match. The Blazers came out and battled the 49ers for every point. UAB trailed in the third set 16-20 before going on a 4-0 run to tie the set. From there on it was a back and forth battle to the end.
Charlotte (15-4, 2-1) fought off set point twice and had a chance to put UAB away but Emma Mitchell came up with a big kill to once again tie the set at 26. The Green and Gold then rattled off two straight point to finish off Charlotte 28-26 in the third set.
In the fourth set, the 49ers looked to be in control early as they went up 17-9, but the Blazers dug deep and began to make their way back. UAB went on a 7-3 run to cut into the Charlotte lead and make it 20-16.
After the 49ers extended the lead back out to six, UAB went on 5-2 run and cut the score down to 24-21, fighting off set and match point three times in the process. It wasn't enough as Charlotte finally finished off the Blazers 25-21 in the fourth set and won the match 3-1.
Freshman Abby Carlile led the way for UAB as she racked up a career-high 10 kills on the night. Mitchell also had a career night as well, scoring a career-high seven kills while getting five digs and tallying a service ace.
The youth movement continued as freshman Shelby Holderfield notched 42 assists for the Blazers. Junior Emily Martinez earned a team-high 17 digs and senior Haley Jared had a solid night recording six kills and 10 digs.
Charlotte was led by outside hitter Janell Sparks who tallied 19 kills and middle hitter Tatyana Thomas who scored 11 kills. The 49ers also had the edge in blocks over UAB with 15 to the Blazers seven.
UAB will return to Bartow on Sunday, Oct. 1 to face off with the FIU Panthers. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
