UAB Hosts Annual Fight Like Hal Memorial Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB wraps up tournament play this weekend as the volleyball team hosts the annual Fight Like Hal Memorial Tournament.
The tournament honors the memory and legacy of Hal Messersmith, the long-time head UAB volleyball coach and the late husband of current head coach Kerry Messersmith, who lost his battle with cancer in July of 2013.
Joining UAB in the tournament will be Western Carolina, New Orleans and Mississippi Valley State.
Tournament Schedule:
Friday, Sept. 15:
Western Carolina vs. New Orleans – 10 a.m.
UAB vs. Mississippi Valley State – 12 p.m.
New Orleans vs. Mississippi Valley – 5 p.m.
UAB vs. Western Carolina – 7 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 16:
Mississippi Valley State vs. Western Carolina – 12 p.m.
UAB vs. New Orleans – 2 p.m.
On Friday night at 7 p.m., the first 300 fans will receive a Fight Like Hal T-shirt and all fans are encouraged to participate in a balloon dedication. Fans will write the names of loved ones who have passed away from cancer on purple balloons and the balloons will be tied up around the arena concourse.
UAB enters the tournament 3-8 but has four non-conference games left, three of them in the tournament, before the start of conference play.
The Blazers are a combined 9-6 against the three teams competing in the tournament. UAB is 3-0 versus Mississippi Valley State, 6-4 against New Orleans and 0-2 against Western Carolina.
