BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team continues its five-match road trip Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Martin, Tenn., to face UT Martin from Skyhawk Field. UAB concludes its weekend slate of games Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at former Conference USA rival Memphis.
UAB (2-0-0) opened the season last week with victories over Georgia State and Jackson State to mark the first time since 2014 that the Blazers have started a season with two consecutive wins.
Rachel Green scored the lone goal and Kelsey Daugherty tallied her fourth career shutout to lift the Blazers to a 1-0 victory over Georgia State. Two days later, Betsy Ornelas tallied two goals and one assist as UAB downed Jackson State 5-0 for its first road win of the season. Daugherty was once again perfect in net and was rewarded with Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week honors on Monday. The Kennesaw, Ga., native is the only keeper in the league with two shutouts this season.
Ornelas leads UAB and is tied for third in the league with five points, while junior Caroline Kehrer stands second on the club with three points on one goal and one assist. As a team, UAB is second in the league and tied for 20th in the NCAA with six goals scored and ranks second in the conference and 23rd in the nation with six assists.
UT Martin (1-1-0) split its two games on opening weekend, posting a 4-1 home win over Conference USA member Marshall before dropping a 2-1 decision Sunday on the road at Evansville.
Junior Danae Kaldaridou paces the Skyhawk offense with five points on two goals and one assist, and midfielder Katelyn Colvin stands second on the squad with four points on one goal and two assists.
"UT Martin is a team that has proven to be very strong in the final third," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "Our team will have to be excellent defensively to help keep them from penetrating our defensive third."
UAB defeated UT Martin last season 4-1 at BBVA Compass Field in the first meeting between the two schools. The Blazers have enjoyed an 8-1-0 all-time record when facing schools currently in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Memphis (2-0-0) posted 3-0 wins over both Samford and UALR last weekend and is in the middle of a stretch that will see the Tigers play their first three games at home.
Junior forward Elizabeth Woerner leads Memphis with four points on two goals, and keeper Rachael Ashworth Shepard has tallied eight saves in net.
"Memphis is a solid program that I expect will make another appearance in the NCAA Tournament this year," Demers added. They are well coached, aggressive on the attack and on defense and have a great deal of experience in all positions. This game will challenge our players both mentally and physically."
Memphis leads the all-time series with UAB 11-8-1 and captured a 1-0 victory in 2015 in the last meeting between the two.
