MARTIN, Tenn. – Amy Brewer scored the game-winning goal and UAB is off to its best start since 2009 following a 3-1 victory over UT Martin Friday evening from Skyhawk Field.
UAB improves to 3-0-0 and hasn't started a season with three consecutive victories since the 2009 team opened the year with six straight wins. The Blazers also improved to 2-0-0 all-time against UT Martin and 9-1-0 against schools currently in the Ohio Valley Conference.
"We've had a good start to our season, but our team also knows we have much more to learn in order to be more consistent and successful," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "We need to manage the game better, but our team recognizes this and is coachable and adaptable to change."
The Blazers wasted little time in building their lead as sophomore Megan Hudgens put UAB ahead 1-0 in the eighth minute with her second goal of the season. Senior Rachel Green found Hudgens for a shot into the left corner of the net.
Brewer notched her first goal of the season just over four minutes later when she used a pass from Morgan Key-Adams to score on a shot from approximately 30 yards out.
"Getting that second goal so early in the game really set the tone for how the rest of the match would go," Brewer said. "Our team is so much better this year, and we work extremely hard for each other every day. This is truly a great team win."
Caroline Kehrer and Betsy Ornelas joined forces late in the second half to push the Blazer lead to 3-0 in the 81st minute. Ornelas, who had five points Sunday at Jackson State, picked up another assist after delivering a pass to a streaking Kehrer that resulted in a one-on-one with keeper Erica Myers. Kehrer finished the play with a goal into the left corner of the net for her second score in as many games.
UT Martin spoiled the shutout bid with a goal from Vanessa Dwumfour-Poku in the 85th minute.
"Tonight's game provided us with a great challenge and I am happy with the way the team performed," Demers added. "The game was important for us to win and start off the weekend road trip with a positive result. UT Martin has four or five players that can be a handful in the attack, and I thought all of our backs did an excellent job of keeping them in front."
UAB keeper Kelsey Daugherty stopped five shots and has only surrendered one goal this season. The Kennesaw, Ga., native is the reigning Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week and boasts a 0.33 goals against average.
UAB looks for its fourth consecutive win Sunday at 7:00 p.m. when the Blazers remain on the road for a contest at former Conference USA rival Memphis.
