MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Marie Levasseur scored the golden goal with just under a minute remaining in double overtime to lift Memphis to a 2-1 victory over UAB Sunday evening from the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Levasseur gained possession in UAB territory, dribbled down the right sideline, cut back to her left and sent a shot that trickled into the back of the net.
"Tonight's game was an absolute battle and our players fought against a very tough opponent," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "I couldn't be happier though with our team's performance and their resilience to fight back into extended time. Our team got stronger today."
Memphis (3-0-0) jumped out in front just over five minutes into play when Catherine Levasseur produced her first goal of the season. Jessica Lisi started the scoring chance with a corner kick that Olivia Gautheir headed back to Levasseur for a shot past UAB keeper Kelsey Daugherty.
"Memphis came out very strong in the first 15 minutes and unfortunately they broke us down for an early goal." Demers added.
Rachel Green pulled UAB even in the 83rd minute with her second goal of the season. Following a corner kick by Regan Kommor, Green charged towards a loose ball inside the Memphis box and fired a shot near post that sailed past a diving Shepard Ashworth.
"We didn't put our heads down after they scored an early goal," Green said. "We fought through almost two overtime periods and learned so much about how far we're willing to push ourselves this year. It's a tough loss, but we'll learn from the mistakes we made and be prepared once the conference season arrives."
Daugherty finished with six saves and now ranks fourth in Conference USA in goals against average (0.71) and fifth in saves (19).
UAB continues its five-game road trip Friday at 6 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Greenville, S.C., to face Furman.
