GREENVILLE, S.C. – Rachel Green scored the golden goal early in double overtime and UAB secured its third road win of the year with a 3-2 victory over Furman Friday at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Green, who was selected as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, picked up right where she left off last week by scoring her team-leading third goal of the season to send UAB home a winner in the 102nd minute.
"We didn't perform like we wanted to tonight, but we regrouped from Sunday's game at Memphis, corrected some crucial mistakes and grinded it out for each other in overtime and got the positive result," Green said. "I am proud of my teammates for finishing strong against a really good team."
Following a defensive first half that resulted in a combined four shots on goal, Furman broke the scoreless draw early in the second half on a goal from Caitlyn Reilly in the 59th minute.
The Blazers needed only 38 seconds to respond with the equalizer, as sophomore Megan Hudgens blasted a shot into the back of the net for her third goal of the season. Freshman Betsy Ornelas put UAB ahead 2-1 in the 73rd minute when she capitalized off a Paladin turnover in their own box and spun around for a shot far post.
Jenny Allen answered for Furman in the 84th minute with a shot from just outside the box that ended up in the left corner of the goal.
"This is a game where we are happy with the result but not happy with our team performance," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "Furman is a very good team and put us under tremendous pressure all game long. We did a poor job of managing the details that have helped us so far."
Kelsey Daugherty finished with seven saves and now has 190 for her career, leaving her only two saves shy from moving into fifth place all-time at UAB.
"We did fight in overtime and it was good for our team morale for Rachel to finish on a hard fought ball played by Jameria," Demers added. "Our backs and Kelsey battled hard against a strong Furman line that had scored 13 goals coming into play tonight."
UAB turned in its best scoring chance of the first half in the 31st minute on a shot from Caroline Kehrer. Following a corner kick by Megan Morrow, Kehrer gained possession and fired a shot that sailed just wide of the Paladin net.
Jamiera Lunsford nearly connected for a header minutes later after UAB sent a cross into the box, but Furman keeper Kellsey Weaver left her line and leapt into the air to snag the ball before Lunsford could connect with her head.
UAB returns to the pitch Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Asheville, N.C., to face UNC Asheville.
