ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UAB women's soccer team completed an undefeated weekend road trip when the Blazers played to a 1-1 double overtime draw with UNC Asheville Sunday from Greenwood Field.
UAB (4-1-1) and UNC Asheville combined for only nine shots in a defensive first half that forced keepers Kelsey Daugherty and Bryson Lee to have to make a total of just four saves.
The Blazers opened the second half on the attack and used Jamiera Lunsford's first career goal to build a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. Amy Brewer picked up an assist on the play as her pass from the top of the box allowed Lunsford to beat Lee with a shot into the left corner of the net.
"I am so glad I was able to contribute to our team effort today and get the momentum going with a goal early in the second half," Lunsford said. "Even though we didn't get the result that we wanted, we are progressing and learning every day."
UNC Asheville capitalized on a defensive miscue just over five minutes later when UAB surrendered an own goal to pull the Bulldogs even 1-1 in the 53rd minute.
"We played a rested and prepared team, and I thought their staff did a great job of preparing their team to put us under tremendous pressure," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "Regardless, we missed a chance to grow and be a better team today. We will start over this week and prepare our team for our home weekend slate of games."
UAB would fire off four more shots during the remainder of regulation and the two overtimes combined, but Lee and the UNC Asheville defense prevented the Blazers from scoring the golden goal.
Daugherty finished with six saves and moved into fifth place all-time at UAB with 195 in her career.
UAB returns home for the first time since Aug. 18 when the Blazers host Tennessee Tech Friday at 7 p.m. from BBVA Compass Field.
