BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Caroline Kehrer had three points and UAB registered its third shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Tennessee Tech Friday evening from BBVA Compass Field.
The victory pushed UAB into first place in Conference USA and allowed the Blazers to surpass its entire win total from a season ago.
"Our biggest task tonight was trying to improve from last Sunday and we continued to talk to the team about that all week long," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "We felt like we went backwards on Sunday in regards to our performance, and we knew that tonight was a night that we had to go forward and get better as a team. I thought tonight we got better and that is always a good thing."
UAB (5-1-1) entered the contest first in Conference USA in goals scored and wasted little time in adding to its league-leading total. Kehrer put the Blazers on the board in the 19th minute with a header into the left corner of the net off a cross from Jessica Do.
Kehrer added an assist later in the half after starting a scoring play in the 27th minute to help Megan Hudgens notch her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Megan Morrow played a corner kick in the box that was handled by Kehrer and passed to her left into the center of the box. Rachel Green, who had fallen to the ground following a collision, played the ball forward while still on the grass to a streaking Hudgens for the goal near post.
"It was really important for the team to play well, especially coming off of last week's performance," Kehrer said. "My mom came down for family weekend and it was nice to have her in the stands for support. We're all having a lot of fun this year and that's a big reason for our success."
UAB keeper Kelsey Daugherty recorded her third shutout of the season and now has six during her career with the Green and Gold. The Kennesaw, Ga., native, who is the reigning Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week, is one shutout shy of moving into a tie for fifth place all-time at UAB.
The Blazers return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when UAB hosts Belmont from BBVA Compass Field.
