JACKSON, Miss. – Betsy Ornelas scored two goals and Kelsey Daugherty registered her second consecutive shutout to lead UAB to a 5-0 victory over Jackson State Sunday afternoon from the JSU Soccer Complex.
The win gives UAB its largest margin of victory since defeating UTSA 5-0 on Sept. 26, 2014, and it's also the first time the Blazers have started a season 2-0-0 since 2014 when UAB opened the year with road wins over South Alabama at Davidson.
UAB opened the season Friday with a 1-0 victory over Georgia State behind a goal from Rachel Green and seven saves by Daugherty.
"Starting the season with two wins is a great feeling," Demers said. "Both games have showed our program the areas that we need to focus our attention to as we start to prepare for our next set of games in Tennessee.
Junior Jessica Do put UAB ahead 1-0 with a goal in the 33rd minute off a pass from Megan Morrow and Caroline Kehrer. Ornelas struck for her first career goal seconds before halftime when she found the back of the net in the 45th minute on an assist by Sarah Buse.
Kehrer later used a pass from Amy Brewer early in the second half to beat Jackson State keeper Faith Toennies and give UAB a 3-0 lead with a goal in the 57th minute. Ornelas added another goal minutes later in the 62nd minute, scoring off a feed from fellow freshman Kamilah Mustafa.
Ornelas picked up her fifth point of the match in the 76th minute when her pass to a streaking Megan Hudgens resulted in UAB's fifth goal of the game.
"Today was a great team effort and it feels amazing to have been able to contribute with two goals," Ornelas said.
The Blazers finished the game with a 33-4 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Daugherty needed to make just one save to collect her fifth career shutout.
"We came into this game knowing that for us to be successful we needed every player to contribute," Demers added. "Jackson State is a tough environment to play in and I am very proud of the way our team performed today."
UAB returns to the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Martin, Tenn., to face UT Martin.
