BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team is set to wrap up its exhibition season when it hosts West Alabama on Saturday, Aug. 19, at BBVA Compass Field. The Blazers and Tigers are set to kick off at 7 p.m.
"We've played them a few times over the last couple of years," head coach Mike Getman said. "They're an excellent team with a lot of local players so for a final exhibition it's a great way for us to finish off preseason."
UAB is coming off a 3-0 exhibition loss to preseason No. 5 Clemson on Aug. 12. The Blazers best scoring chance came in the final period when Adam Brooker's shot sailed high off the crossbar.
West Alabama finished its 2016 season on a high note winning the Gulf South Conference Title on penalty kicks. The Tigers had one of the prolific offenses in Division II as they ranked 20th in shots on goal per game (7.8), 26th in goals (43) and had the 26th best scoring offense averaging 2.3 goals per game.
UAB and West Alabama have never met officially on the pitch making the Tigers the only team on the Blazers' schedule this season that they do not have prior history with.
Prior to the game Coach Getman, his staff and players will host their 25th annual Youth Clinic on West Campus Field. The first 400 kids will receive a UAB soccer ball, compliments of Alabama Power. In addition each participant will receive up to four tickets to the match with additional tickets available for purchase on-site at $3.00. Attendees and family staying for the game can enjoy a meal in the stands beginning at 6 p.m.
"This clinic is something we've done for a number of years," Getman said. "It's a great event and an opportunity for our players and staff to give back to the soccer community. Typically we have four or five hundred kids and another four or five hundred parents. It's a fun event with a lot of kids having a lot of fun with soccer balls."
Additionally, fans will have the chance to receive on-field autographs from student-athletes and coaches following the match. Posters will be available underneath the Marketing tent.
