David Valverde Named to the Preseason All-CUSA Team

IRVING, Texas – Senior midfielder David Valverde of the UAB men's soccer team has been named to the preseason All-Conference USA team as announced by the league office on Friday.
Valverde garnered C-USA Second Team Honors in 2016 after starting all 18 matches for the Blazers. The Mobile, Ala., native played a crucial role in the 2016 defense that allowed 14 fewer goals than the season before. He enters the 2017 season having started 30 consecutive matches dating back to his sophomore season.
"David is well deserving of this honor," head coach Mike Getman said. "He has had three great years with us and I expect his senior season to be special. It is nice that the rest of C-USA recognizes his unique talents."
The Blazers were selected to finish sixth overall in preseason polls. UAB returns 21 letterwinners from the 2016 season including starters Valverde, Massimo Ferrin, Tarnue Tyler, Philip Makinde, Mathieu Laurent and Evan Scarbrough.
UAB begins its 2017 preseason on Aug. 12 when its hosts No. 5 Clemson at BBVA Compass Field. The Blazers and Tigers are set to kickoff at 6 p.m.
