UAB Men’s Soccer Season Preview: Part Five
8/10/2017 3:12:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2017 UAB men's soccer team has returning starters at every position on the field, except one – in the net. The Blazers have three keepers on their roster with sophomore Julian Mehl being the only one with any collegiate experience.
"At the end of the day it is the one position on the field that often wins or loses games for us," head coach Mike Getman said. "We have three great goalkeepers that are all young but are tremendously athletic and skillful. It will be an interesting battle to see who earns the starting role."
#0 Julian Mehl | 6-1 | 170 | Sophomore
Mehl appeared in two games last season serving as the backup to four-year starter Joe Kuzminky. He played 28:38 minutes and allowed two goals. He served as the starting goalie throughout the spring and on the Blazers trip to Italy.
Getman on Mehl: "Julian played a little bit last fall and then started every game this spring and in Italy. He is an extremely consistent player who reads the game well but he is also very quick."
#00 Seth Torman | 6-3 | 160 | Freshman
Torman, a local product from nearby Pelham High School, helped lead the Panthers to a fourth place finish in the 6A state tournament in 2017. He was named First Team All-Region, All-County and All-Area. Torman was also a member of the Panthers' football and basketball teams.
Getman on Torman: "At 6-3, Seth is probably the most athletic of our three goalkeepers. He is big, fast, can jump out of the building and I think he will compete for playing time right away."
#1 James Teal | 6-5 | 210 | Redshirt Freshman
Teal did not see any action during his redshirt season.
Getman on Teal: "James redshirted last season and unfortunately had injuries in the spring that prevented him from playing. He has shown that he can be a top-level college keeper and we expect him to compete for the starting role right away. At 6-4 he is very big but very athletic so he has a great combination of size and speed."
UAB is preparing to host Clemson on August 12 in each team's first pre-season match of the season. The Blazers and Tigers kick-off at 6 p.m. at BBVA Compass Field.
