Blazers Send Two To Junior World Softball Championship

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Current UAB softball pitcher Claire Blount and incoming freshman Rachel Owens are competing this week at the WBSC Jr. Women's Softball World Championship.
Blount is competing for Team Ireland while Owens is playing for Team Mexico.
The seven-day tournament features teams from 26 nations made up of that countries' top 19-and-under female athletes. The tournament began July 24 with Days 1-4 featuring round robin play within four pool groups.
The gold medal game is set for July 30 with the bronze medal game being played before it.
UAB head coach Marla Townsend said having Blount and Owens competing in the tournament shows what great athletes UAB has and attracts.
"We are excited to have Claire playing with Team Ireland," Townsend said. "She is a wonderful ambassador for both our university and our Blazer softball program. It is also a wonderful opportunity for Rachel to be able to compete with Team Mexico and get a jump start on preparation for her freshman year. We can't wait for her to join us in the fall."
