IRVING, Texas – Conference USA announced today that Catherine Ragon has been selected as one of 14 recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Award.
This is the ninth year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
"They could not have awarded this scholarship to a more deserving person than Catherine," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "She has given so much time, effort and passion to her school, team, fellow athletes and the conference. I am so happy to see her receive this, and I am very excited to follow her very promising future."
The conference annually awards the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarships to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
"UAB SAAC has been so fortunate to have Catherine lead us during her tenure at UAB," Assistant Director for Student Development Caitlin Callaghan said. "Her dedication towards women's tennis, academics, leadership and service makes her very deserving of this award."
Ragon plans to continue her education this fall and will pursue a doctorate of physical therapy at Texas Women's University.
"I am extremely thankful and honored to be a recipient of Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Award," Ragon said. "I'm appreciative to have been a student-athlete in a conference that recognizes and encourages hard working student-athletes. I know that through my experiences as a women's tennis player at UAB and my involvement within intercollegiate athletics, I am well-equipped to succeed in graduate school and beyond."
