QUICK RECAP - UAB SWEEPS DOUBLE-HEADER
The UAB baseball team had a lot to celebrate on Wednesday and did so by scoring a plethora of runs across two seven-inning games versus Alabama A&M. The Blazers won by scores of 8-2 and 7-1.
The Blazers got going right away in game one as Brewer Hicklen led off with a triple to right field and scored on a fielding error by the third baseman in the bottom of the first inning.Hicklen had a huge night at the plate. The sophomore finished 5-for-7 with four runs, one double, one triple, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Hicklen bumped his average this year to .286 and now leads the team in that category.
Isaiah Gonzales-Montoya made his first career start for UAB in game one and was sensational. The junior right-hander coasted through five innings, allowing just a single base runner via a single in the fourth inning. Gonzales-Montoya struck out two and kept his pitch count low at 45 pitches for the night.
BREWING SUCCESS
Brewer Hicklen leads the Blazers in multiple categories through the early part of the season. His huge night against Alabama A&M now makes him the team leader in batting average (.286), hits (12), triples (three), and total bases (21).
Hicklen batted .289 with a team-high 37 runs, four triples, 38 walks, and 22 stolen bases a season ago. The redshirt sophomore also hit three home runs, drove in 26, and added seven doubles. Hicklen is also a member of the UAB football team and spent the fall practicing with both sports. In football, the 6'2", 208 lbs. athlete is a wide receiver and hauled in three catches for 102 yards in two scrimmage games in the fall. D1Baseball.com recongized his gifted athletic ability, recently tabbing him the seventh-best overall prospect and fourth-best position player in Conference USA. Hicklen is already nearing the UAB record books as he has 25 career steals, 13 shy of the top ten in UAB history.
SCOUTING LOUISIANA-MONROE
The Warhawks have played 10 of their 14 games on the road this season and have managed a 2-8 away record. ULM has lost six straight games with five of those coming against SEC foes Alabama and Arkansas.
