BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team returned to its winning ways on Sunday when the Blazers defeated in-state foe Alabama A&M 4-2 from George Ward Park.
Blazer freshmen Marlene Herrmann and Hana Sisirak turned in a 6-0 doubles win over Shrarre Smith and Beatriz Cerezo at No. 2 to give UAB an early advantage. Fellow newcomers Natalie Voss and Taylor Factor clinched the point for UAB when they downed Alyssa Williams and Jazmine Lawson 7-6 at No. 3.
Alabama A&M pulled even after winning a singles match by forfeit at the No. 6 position, and Smith gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead following her 6-1, 6-1 win over Factor at No. 4. Reghan Lynch tied the match 2-2 after turning in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 against Rida Khalid.
Sisirak registered a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cerezo at No. 2 to regain the lead for UAB, and Voss sealed the win at No. 5 when she bested Williams 6-2, 6-3.
"This team has been through a lot and wins haven't come easy," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "I am proud of the way we handled adversity today. Taylor and Natalie gave us a lot of momentum with their doubles win. They had been coming close lately and it was good to see them get the win. With Pardis not playing singles, everyone had to step up to help us get a win."
UAB returns to action Wednesday at noon when the Blazers travel to Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia State.
