BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team has added another name to its 2017 signing class. Right-handed pitcher Troy Cordrey (Helena, Ala./Helena) has joined the Blazers talented group of signees.
“Troy is from the exact mold of the Pitcher who has had tremendous success at UAB,” said UAB head coach Brian Shoop. “He throws from a low 3/4 arm slot so there is a lot of movement on his fastball and we love fastball movement in the bottom of the strike zone. He is a strike thrower and can pound the zone with three different pitches. And he is a competitor on the mound. This combination will give Troy a chance to contribute immediately and we fully believe he will have a great career at UAB.”
Cordrey has been dominant on the mound over the last two seasons for Helena. As a sophomore he pitched 60 innings and sported a 1.72 ERA for the Class 5A State Runner-ups while garnering the school’s Pitching MVP Award, Shelby County Second Team honors, and being named All-Metro Honorable Mention. Last year, Cordrey held a 1.90 ERA over 65 innings, throwing five complete games. He threw 16 consecutive scoreless innings during the state tournament.
Cordrey has also played for the East Cobb Astros the last two seasons, the same team that fellow Blazers Thomas Johns and Tyler Tolbert have played. He has also been a Perfect Game five-time All-Tournament team honoree and was part of the 18U World Wood Bat National Championship team. Cordrey is a talented athlete overall who has reached nearly 90 mph on the gun and played football as a freshman and sophomore.
“Troy has played for some great coaches,” said Shoop. “P.J. Guy is building a state powerhouse at Helena High School and in the summer Troy pitched for Jamie Crane and the prestigious East Coast Astro’s.”
Not to be outdone by his on-field accomplishments are the plethora of off-field honors Cordrey holds. He holds a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society in addition to the Spanish National Honor Society and serving as the Senior Class Treasurer. He was awarded the UAB Break Through Scholarship.
“Troy is also a gifted and committed student and we know that he will continue the tradition of academic excellence that our baseball team has enjoyed this last decade,” added Shoop. “We are thrilled that Troy is joining our baseball family next year.”
