BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball took game one over Wichita State (21-14, 5-5) on Friday night by a score of 4-3. With the win, the Blazers (23-11, 8-2) won their eighth straight home game and their eighth straight conference win.
The Shockers jumped out front early with two runs in the top of the second. After an RBI groundout by Jack Quick, Alex Ulloa roped a single to bring in Jacob Gutierrez to put Wichita State up, 2-0.
The Green and Gold would quickly answer with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Austin Pierzynski pushed across the first run on an RBI groundout. Baylor Roberts would follow that up by doubling on the first pitch he saw to tie the game at two. The next batter, Kevin Hall Jr. muscled a single to center to give the Blazers a 3-2 lead through two innings.
That score would hold until the top of the fifth inning. Jack Quick launched his second home run of the season to tie the game at three.
UAB would finally get its offense going again in the bottom of the eighth. After a leadoff base hit by Andrew Hunt, Austin Pierzynski would get him to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run to put runners on the corners with one out. The next batter was Baylor Roberts and with two strikes, Roberts sent a fly ball to left field to bring home Hunt on a sac fly to put the Green and Gold up, 4-3, going into the top of the ninth.
Brendan Conner was stellar coming out of the UAB bullpen. Conner did not allow a hit until the top half of the ninth inning. With two outs, pinch hitter Nolan Ganter dropped a hit into left center, but would be cut down at second after a perfect relay by the Blazers to cap off the 4-3 win.
Conner tossed the final four innings, allowed two hits and no runs, and faced just 14 batters in the outing en route to his fourth win of the season.
