UAB Falls to UTSA in Conference Doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UAB softball team fell to UTSA in a Conference USA doubleheader on Friday at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.

UTSA (10-16, 1-3) struck in the first inning by scoring two runs. The first run came when a UAB fielding error scored Rylee Rodriguez and the second run came off the bat of Kaley Pyles when she singled to left center and drove in Randee Crawford.
A single run was added in both the second and third innings for the Roadrunners before the final two were plated in the bottom of the sixth.
The first run of the inning came on a bases loaded walk and the final run of the game came when Crawford singled up the middle and scored Lindsey Stewart.
Despite having eight hits in the game, UAB (9-16, 2-2) could only score three runs and all three came off home run balls.
Analyse Petree sent the first home run of her career over the left center wall to get things started in the top of the second to pull within one.
In the fifth inning, Joanna Fallen launched a two-run shot down the left field line that snuck in just past the foul pole to pull within one again and make the score 4-3.
Two Blazers, Destini England and Fallen, had multi-hit games. England finished the game going 3-for-4 while Danii Fernandez, Petree, and Molli Garcia all contributed one hit.
Claire Blount (4-5) suffered the loss in the circle for UAB. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native pitched the entire game and recorded eight strikeouts.
Lizzy Fox (8-11) celebrated the win by tossing a complete game and only giving up three earned runs.
UAB 0, UTSA 8
The bats stalled for UAB (9-17, 2-3) in the second game against UTSA. The Blazers only recorded one hit and didn’t score any runs.
UTSA (11-16, 2-3) scored eight runs and tallied 13 hits in the nightcap. The Roadrunners added three single runs in the first, second and third innings before they had a big sixth inning and brought five runs around to score.
Cara Goodwin (0-6) took the loss in the circle. She recorded seven strikeouts and walked only two batters in 5.2 innings of work.
Nicole Merrill (3-4) captured the win for UTSA. The senior pitched the complete game and only gave up one hit in the shut out.
The Blazers will face the Roadrunners in the series finale Saturday at Roadrunner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
