UAB Softball Hosts Southern Miss to Open Conference Play

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team opens Conference USA play by hosting a three-game series against Southern Miss at Mary Bowers Field this weekend. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and the series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

THE SERIES
UAB holds a 32-25 overall record over Southern Miss. The last time the two teams met in regulation was in 2016 and the Blazers won the series going 2-1. The two programs also met twice in the 2016 conference tournament where the Blazers defeated the Golden Eagles 3-0 and 5-1.
ON THE BLAZERS
UAB (6-13, 0-0) is coming off a 2-5 weekend in the Dr. Bobbie Bailey Memorial Tournament at Kennesaw State. The Blazers picked up wins over Dartmouth and Akron.
Madison Millsaps had a monster weekend for the Blazers. She knocked three home runs, a pair of two-run shots and a grand slam, for eight RBI. The lefty also led UAB with 12 total bases and slugged an impressive .923 mark.
Analyse Petree also had a huge weekend. She led team with a .400 batting average, recorded six hits, three of them doubles, and recorded seven RBI for a .600 slugging percentage.
Destini England upped her hit count in the tournament this past weekend, bringing her overall total to a team-high 17. The freshman also leads the team with 14 runs scored and four triples through 19 games.
Madison Hir is coming off a win in the circle for the Blazers. She leads the UAB pitching staff with a 2-3 record and a 2.59 ERA.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN MISS
Southern Miss enters the matchup with an 11-8 overall record. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 1-0 loss to North Carolina A&T when they hosted the Aggies on Wednesday.
Lauren Holifield leads Southern Miss with 17 hits, 29 total bases, 11 runs, and four home runs. The senior also has a team-high 11 RBI and is slugging .527.
Kim Crowson runs the Golden Eagles’ pitching staff with a 1.68 ERA. The junior right hander has thrown seven complete games, recorded 23 strikeouts and only given up 10 earned runs in 41.2 innings of work.
A LOOK AHEAD
The Blazers will host two midweek games against South Alabama and Lipscomb on March 14 and March 15, respectively, before traveling to San Antonio, Texas to face UTSA in another conference showdown.
