UAB Softball Opens 2017 in Paradise

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The UAB softball team will open its 2017 season under head coach Marla Townsend on Thursday against Oregon State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

THE SERIES
UAB and Oregon State have met three times in school history and the Beavers lead the all-time series 3-0. The last time the two teams faced each other was March 29, 2006 in Corvallis, Ore., where Oregon State routed UAB in a 17-0 win.
Sacramento State and UAB will meet for the third time and the Hornets enter the game with a 2-0 all-time lead over the Blazers. Sacramento State won 15-8 the last time the teams met in 2008.
UAB and Boise State will meet for the first time in school history on Friday.
The Blazers edge the Rainbow Wahine 2-1 in the all-time series but Hawaii won the last game the two teams played by a score of 7-2 in 2013.
ON THE BLAZERS
Joanna Fallen finished second on the team last season with a .352 batting average, 62 hits, and 31 runs. The Prattville, Ala., native also contributed with 14 doubles and 27 RBI and was one of only four Blazers to start all 59 games last season.
Mary Warren led the Blazers with 11 home runs and 36 RBI in 2016 and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. She ended the year third on the squad with a .309 batting average, 42 hits and an impressive .566 slugging percentage.
Cara Goodwin returns for her senior year coming off a successful junior campaign in the circle. The right-handed pitcher from Cullman, Ala., boasts a 3.15 ERA and finished the season with a 17-12 record. She pitched 17 complete games, two shutouts and recorded 137 strikeouts in 188.2 innings of work.
Molli Garcia transferred to UAB from Wallace State Community College-Hanceville and will be looking to make some noise for the Green and Gold this season. She finished her junior college career with a .344 batting average 124 hits, 78 RBI and 23 home runs.
SCOUTING OREGON STATE
Oregon State ended 2016 with a 30-20-1 overall record and went 9-14 in conference play. Natalie Hampton returns for her senior season to lead the Beavers. She led the team with 50 RBI and nine home runs and was second on the squad with 58 hits, 10 doubles and a .349 mark.
SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE
Zamari Hinton had an impressive sophomore season with the Hornets. She ended the season with a .356 batting average, 58 hits, 17 RBI and 65 total bases. As a team, Sacramento State finished with a 28-22 overall record and 15-6 conference record.
SCOUTING BOISE STATE
Boise State ended 2016 with a 14-38 overall record and 6-18 record in conference play. Rebekah Cervantes returns for her sophomore season and was second on the squad with a .342 batting average, 50 hits and 36 RBI in 2016.
SCOUTING HAWAII
The Rainbow Wahine finished 2016 with a 24-30 overall record and went 8-13 in conference play. Nicole Lopez returns for Hawaii after finishing 2016 with a .287 batting average, 50 hits, 23 RBI and nine doubles as a freshman.
A LOOK AHEAD
The Blazers will travel to Madeira Beach, Fla., to participate in the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational on Feb. 17-19. UAB will face Southern Illinois, Michigan State, Siena, Boston University and Villanova.
