BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Arkansas State rallied from 3-1 down to defeat the UAB women’s tennis team 4-3 Sunday afternoon from George Ward Park.
Arkansas State won the first doubles match of the day with a victory at No. 3, but Pardis Kianoush and Reghan Lynch turned in a 6-3 win over Shannon O’Brien and Julie Gauguery at No. 1 to keep UAB alive. Marlene Herrmann and Hana Sisirak completed the comeback with a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Victoria Pisani and Sabina Jeresic to win the point.
Tori Roberts pulled Arkansas State even after she posted a 6-0, 6-1 singles win over Taylor Factor at No. 5, but Herrmann regained the lead for UAB with a 6-0, 6-1 win of her own over Jeresic at No. 2.
Sisirak put the Blazers ahead 3-1 following her 7-5, 6-2 win over Pisani and No. 4, but consecutive victories from O’Brien, Gauguery and Allison Quammen allowed the Red Wolves to fight back for the win.
“Today was especially tough to swallow,” UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. “There is no margin in these matches for extended periods of mental lapses, and this is particularly true for our team. It is my hope that we will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get better for next weekend.”
UAB returns to the court Saturday at noon when the Blazers host UT Martin from George Ward Park.
