IRVING, Texas - Redshirt sophomore kicker Nick Vogel has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week for his integral role in the Blazers' 52-21 victory over Rice, the league office announced Monday.
Vogel was perfect against the Owls and accounted for 10 points on 1-of-1 field goals and 7-of-7 point after attempts.
As impressive, of Vogel's nine kickoffs, seven of them went for touchbacks which put the Blazer defense in great position against the Rice offense. His nine kickoffs went for 580 yards, good for an average of 64.4 yards per kick.
For the season, Vogel is 8-of-11 on field goal attempts and 34-of-36 on point after attempts. His 58 total points are the third most on the team behind A.J. Erdely and Spencer Brown who each have 60 (10 rushing touchdowns apiece).
This is Vogel's first career C-USA award and he is the second UAB player this season to win the honor, along with defensive end Stacy Keely for his game winning field goal block against Louisiana Tech.
The Blazers travel to San Antonio this Saturday for a C-USA West Division tilt UTSA. The game kicks at 6 p.m. at the Alamo Dome.
