TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Monday that UAB is one of three programs that earned ITA grants based on their participation in the inaugural ITA Community Service Month Presented by Limoneira.
ITA Community Service Month was created to spotlight all the great work in the communities ITA member coaches and student-athletes do on an annual basis. The Limoneira Hours Challenge provided a friendly competition by tracking the total number of hours that each school served.
During ITA Community Service Month Presented by Limoneira, more than 2,000 student-athletes served over 8,000 total hours of service in their community or on their campus. Projects ranged from community tennis clinics to hurricane relief to Breast Cancer Awareness projects to elementary school mentoring.
UAB generated the most buzz on Indi.com to earn the $500 ITA grant. Programs were asked to upload photos and video from their community service projects and share through Indi.com, share them on their social media feeds. The Blazers worked with Habitat for Humanity and helped put up siding at roof beams at the home of Tiffany Wells of Birmingham.
"We had a great time doing the Habitat for Humanity build," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "It was a great idea by the ITA to do a community service month and tap into our competitive nature. We really got into promoting our photo through our social media and we ended up beating the second place photo by over 1500 likes. We would like to thank our fans on our social media accounts for supporting us. It always feels great to win in anything, and we will find a good use for the $500 grant from the ITA."
All teams that performed 20-plus hours of community service were entered in a drawing, where the team selected received a $500 ITA grant. The College of Wooster took home the prize. During the month of October, the team was involved in a community tennis event and volunteered at their local elementary school.
The ITA would like to thank Limoneira for serving as the national presenting sponsor of ITA Community Service Month, as well as thank all the programs across the country that participated.
