Blazers Set To Host Golden Eagles

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team opens its last home stand of the season tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CT as the Blazers host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Bartow Arena.
The Green and Gold are coming off a tough weekend that saw them drop two matches on the road against UTSA and WKU. UAB played well in both and had a two set lead on UTSA before the Roadrunners rallied to win the match in five.
Redshirt senior Gabby Deshotel leads the Blazers with 311 kills on the year and is averaging 3.14 kills per set. She has added 216 digs which places her seventh on the team. Her fellow senior Haley Jared ranks second on the squad in kills with 274 and is third in digs with 203.
The senior tour continues as Erika Zembyla sits third with 213 kills and fourth with 136 digs and leads the teams in service aces with 32. Petra Silic has 175 kills good for fourth on the team and is second in blocks scoring 76 with just three games left in the regular season.
Southern Miss comes to Bartow Arena having won four of its last six matches. The Golden Eagles are perched in sixth place in the conference standings, three spots ahead of UAB.
The Golden Eagles are led offensively by Kylie Grandy who leads the team with 307 kills and is followed closely by Chandler Marshall who has 293. Natalie Druhan has the team lead in digs at 343.
"Southern Miss is a good team and one that is ahead of us in the standings," head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "We need to have these three wins to close out the season and it starts Friday night with Southern Miss."
UAB leads the all-time series 25-24 but the Golden Eagles have won four of the last five match ups with the Blazers last win in the series coming Nov. 14, 2014.
The Blazers last home game is Thursday Nov. 9, as the Blazers host Senior Night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CT with the Senior Night celebrations taking place immediately following the match.
