Blazers Fall 3-0 To Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team fell to Southern Miss 3-0 (22-25, 24-26, 19-25) Friday night at Bartow Arena.
Senior Haley Jared led UAB with nine kills with fellow senior Erika Zembyla following close behind with eight kills. Junior Victoria Young scored seven kills, three blocks and a service ace through the three sets.
Shelby Holderfield, UAB's freshman setter, tallied 30 assists on the night and had a block assist in the second set. She also fired home two of the Blazers three service aces. Junior Emily Martinez collected a team high 10 digs for the Green and Gold.
UAB (11-17, 4-8 C-USA) struggled with errors throughout the match totaling 17 attack errors, nine service errors and six reception errors. The Blazers had a total 35 kills while hitting .170 percent for the match.
Southern Miss (17-10, 7-4) likewise had problems with errors racking up 18 attack errors, seven service errors but had just three reception errors. The Golden Eagles were led by Kylie Grandy who scored 13 kills and four service aces.
The Blazers trailed 19-12 in the first set but came storming back to bring the set to within one point but the Golden Eagles closed on a 3-1 run to win the opening set 25-22. UAB was in command of the second set with a 19-14 lead but four errors and a service ace by Natalie Druhan tied things up quickly.
UAB fought off set point twice in the second set to tie it up at 24 apeice and force a Southern Miss timeout. However, the Golden Eagles came out and got a quick kills from Kelsey Chambers and ended the second on a service ace from Melanie Miller to win 26-24.
Southern Miss cruised in the third set hitting .341 percent to take 25-19 set victory and win the match in straight sets.
The Blazers will return to the Bartow Arena floor Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. CT for Senior Night and a match against Florida Atlantic.
