Blazers Continue Homestand Monday Against Chattanooga

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team continues its three-game homestand Monday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers welcome Chattanooga to Bartow Arena.
UAB (1-0) opened the regular season Friday with a 96-67 victory over Jacksonville to improve to 33-6 at home against non-conference competition since the start of the 2012-13 season.
Senior Chris Cokley scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead a quartet of Blazers in double figures. Freshman Zack Bryant finished with 18 points and eight assists in his debut and William Lee added 12 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Newcomer Jalen Perry chipped in with 11 points and three rebounds off the bench.
The Blazers shot 61.4 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from beyond the arc and outrebounded the Dolphins 41-26. In addition, UAB tallied 26 assists and forced 16 Jacksonville turnovers.
Chattanooga (0-1) suffered a 74-65 setback Friday at Wyoming in its first game of the season. Junior guard Nat Dixon scored a team-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds, while James Lewis added 12 points and three rebounds.
The Mocs posted a 19-12 overall record and a 10-8 mark in league play last season but lost all five of its starters from a season ago. In a preseason poll voted on by the SoCon coaches, Chattanooga was predicted to finish seventh in the league this season.
UAB and Chattanooga will meet on the hardwood for the 14th time in school history when the two teams battle on Monday. The Blazers own a 10-3 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the 1981-82 season and have won four of the last five meetings. Chattanooga, however, captured the most recent matchup with an 83-67 victory in 2014. UAB is 8-0 all-time against the Mocs in Birmingham.
UAB is 18-4 all-time in games against schools currently in the Southern Conference. In the most recent meeting against the league, UAB dropped an 84-74 decision at home last season to Furman in the second game of the season. Outside of Chattanooga and Furman, the Blazers have also faced ETSU and Samford in their history.
