On Friday night, the UAB Department of Athletics will induct five new members into the Hall of Fame. Daniel Gaitan played for the Blazers from 1978-1980. He holds the career records for goals (57), points (133) and points per game (3.1) Check out what the hall of famer had to say about his upcoming induction.
What does UAB mean to you?
UAB represents: Passion. Passion for learning, growing and achieving success that led me to where I am today. Attending UAB offered me not only an opportunity to demonstrate academic success, but athletic attainment as well.
What is your best memory from your time playing here?
My best memory of playing for UAB was being part of a team that was closely knit. Though our own personal talents were exhibited, they were celebrated among the teammates. We worked hard and accomplished great things together.
What does it mean to you to be inducted into the UAB Hall of Fame?
It is an absolute honor; I am truly humbled. Playing soccer is probably one of my favorite past times. While my passion for medicine led me on a different path, I never have forgotten from where my journey began. I was part of something wonderful that was built upon throughout my life.
What do you think of the way that UAB has grown since you played here?
With the support of the university, Mike Getman and his team of coaches have raised the soccer program to a competitive national level.
Looking back, how did UAB help mold you into the person that you are today?
UAB helped establish a strong educational foundation. Throughout my academic career, those tools were utilized in helping me achieve where I am today.
