BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team begins its quest for a Conference USA championship on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT when the Blazers face Florida Atlantic in the opening round from the FAU Soccer Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.
UAB (13-3-3, 7-2-1) won its final two games of the regular season last weekend to secure the No. 3 seed in the postseason tournament. The Blazers topped Middle Tennessee 2-1 on Friday and WKU 2-0 on Sunday to record their most wins since 2004.
Junior Kelsey Daugherty secured her seventh shutout of the season against the Hilltoppers and lowered her league-leading goals against average to 0.75 en route to earning All-Conference USA First Team accolades.
Midfielder Amy Brewer netted her 10th goal of the season over the weekend and finished the regular season with a team-best 25 points. The Peachtree City, Ga., native was selected to the All-Conference USA First Team, marking the first time UAB has featured two first team selections since 2007.
Sophomore forward Megan Hudgens ranks second on UAB with 19 points on seven goals and five assists, while Rachel Green and Caroline Kehrer each totaled 17 points on seven goals and three assists.
"I'm excited for our program to be a part of the conference tournament," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "Our players have been very diligent all year long and are very excited to keep playing together for as long as we can. We're looking forward to the next chapter in our season."
Florida Atlantic won its final three matches of the season and shutout all three of their opponents en route to earning the No. 6 seed in the Conference USA Tournament. The Owls, who are serving as tournament host, finished the regular season with a 6-2-1 record at home and are unbeaten in their last three at the FAU Soccer Stadium, which includes a 1-1 tie with UAB earlier this month.
Florida Atlantic sophomore forward Pernille Velta leads the Owl offense with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Conference USA First Team selection Ebba Blomqvist is second on the team with 10 points on five goals. Keeper Jennifer O'Campo owns a 1.03 goals against average and has made 86 saves to go along with seven shutouts.
