Blazers Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to FAU at C-USA Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Asta Arnadottir scored the golden goal four minutes into overtime and No. 6 seed Florida Atlantic upset third-seeded UAB 1-0 on Wednesday night in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament at FAU Soccer Stadium.
Elisha Holmes assisted on the goal when her pass across the box allowed Arnadottir to charge towards the loose ball and push a shot far post and past a diving Kelsey Daugherty.
"My heart is broken for our kids." UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "It wasn't a lack of effort that hurt us today. We made a mistake and Florida Atlantic capitalized on it. We had chances to finish the game and unfortunately we came up short. When you get to tournament play and the game in tight like it was tonight, the margin for error is so small."
UAB (13-4-3, 7-2-1) finishes one of its best seasons in school history and featured one of the top turnarounds in the NCAA, winning nine more games than all of last season and recording the most victories since 2004. In addition, the Blazers went from just one Conference USA win in 2016 to seven this season.
Individually, five Blazers were selected all-conference to mark the third-most such selections in school history and the highest total since having six in 2004. Senior Amy Brewer finished with 25 points to record the 10th-most in a single season in school history, and she was one of only seven players to have two hat tricks this season. Daugherty led Conference USA with a 0.75 goals against average in the regular season and tallied seven shutouts for the second-most in school history.
"I am beyond thankful for the experience this year has brought for our program and staff," Demers added. "We grew as a team and as people. We will miss our seniors deeply and I wish we could have done more for them today and stay together as a team to fight another day. All the best to Florida Atlantic in the next round."
Sophomore Megan Hudgens led UAB with three shots and Daugherty tallied five saves and ends the season with 95.
