BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kelsey Daugherty notched her seventh shutout of the season and the UAB women's soccer team secured the No. 3 seed in the Conference USA Tournament with a 2-0 victory over WKU Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Field.
UAB (13-3-3, 7-2-1) finishes the regular season having won nine more games and six more league contests than a season ago. In addition, head coach Erica Demers set a school record for wins by a first-year head coach, surpassing the 12 victories posted by Paul Harbin in 1996.
The Blazers will face No. 6 seed and tournament host Florida Atlantic on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT from the FAU Soccer Stadium. UAB and Florida Atlantic played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime earlier this season in Boca Raton.
"Our players have accomplished so much this year and now it's about extending the time spent together," Demers said. "They truly enjoy being around one another and it has shown in our work ethic for one another on the field."
Junior Jessica Do notched the game-winning goal for UAB on Sunday when she connected with Regan Kommor and Caroline Kehrer in the 22nd minute. Kommor sent a corner kick into the WKU box where Kehrer headed the ball towards the far post. Do gathered the loose ball and fired a shot into the corner for her second goal of the year.
"It was great to score a goal in a game where everyone contributed," Do said. "We're excited to see what we can do this coming week as we head into the conference tournament. This was such a great win for our program."
Kehrer added her seventh goal of the season to give the Blazers a 2-0 edge midway through the second half. Freshman Kassandra Daniel played the ball forward to Morgan-Keys Adams for a shot that Kehrer volleyed past WKU keeper Allison Leone for the goal.
"I'm so happy for our players and our program." Demers added. "This win was important for us today because we had to take care of our home field. We wanted to send our seniors off with a win and get better as a team going into the conference tournament."
Daugherty finished with four saves for UAB and now owns the second-most shutouts in a single season in school history.
