HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The UAB men's soccer team dropped a double overtime 2-1 heartbreaker to Marshall on Saturday night from the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
"This was a tough one," head coach Mike Getman said. "We only allowed one shot since half-time and it beats us with 17-seconds left in double overtime. We played so well and we had so many chances to win. Soccer cane be a cruel game sometimes. We will regound and get ready for a huge match with South Carolina on Friday."
After battling to double overtime, Marshall (7-7-1) scored the game winner with 15-seconds remaining on the clock when Adi Dakwar scored his second goal of the season to give the Thundering Herd a 2-1 victory.
Marshall scored its first goal with five minutes remaining in the first half after John Pappas found the back of the net following a blocked shot making the match 1-0.
UAB (5-6-4) scored its lone goal of the night at the 75th minute mark when Joseph Buete netted his first career goal following a Massimo Ferrin shot that was blocked back to him. Buete's goal at the time tied the game at 1.
Despite the loss, UAB keeper James Teal had a stellar night in goal picking up a career high eight saves. The freshman, who has been among the nation's leaders in a plethora of categories, rounded out an impressive month of October averaging five saves over the Blazers' seven games.
The Blazers' balanced offensive attack once again held true tonight as Buete became the 11th player for the Green and Gold to score a goal this season.
UAB closes the regular season on Friday, Nov. 3, when it welcomes South Carolina to BBVA Compass Field for Senior Night. The Blazers will recognize their five seniors – Rami Dajani, Ryan Sullivan, Chandler Stroupe, Evan Scarbrough and David Valverde – in a pregame ceremony with kickoff between the Blazers and Gamecocks slated for 7 p.m.
