BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In a must win game for both teams it was the South Carolina Gamecocks who walked away with a 1-0 win over the UAB men's soccer team on Friday night at BBVA Compass Field.
"It was an unbelievably frustrating result but I could not be more proud of the way the guys played" head coach Mike Getman said. I thought we controlled the match from the opening whistle. We had 16 chances to score and we did everything we could want to do except we couldn't get the ball to go in the net.
This team has fought and battled every match all year long and even though the results didn't go our way I thought we played really good soccer and played really well as a team in every game and in that aspect I couldn't be more proud of the guys."
South Carolina netted the golden goal in the 68th minute when Christoffer Wallander Ianev found the back of the net from deep up the right side of the field.
UAB did not go down without a fight though rattling off 16 shots to the Gamecocks eight. The Blazers final shot came off the foot of Massimo Ferrin in the 88th minute but sailed wide of the net giving South Carolina the victory.
The Blazers finish the season with a record of 5-7-4 and a 1-6-1 mark in league play. The win for the Gamecocks landed them a spot as the No. 7 seed in the Conference USA Tournament.
Rami Dajani, David Valverde, Ryan Sullivan, Chandler Stroupe and Evan Scarbrough all wrapped up their careers in the Green and Gold Friday night.
Dajani closes his career having played in 60 games with 16 career goals and 38 points. In his time at UAB he was a member of the 2013 Conference USA Freshman Team. The team captain is set to graduate in December with a degree in exercise science.
Valverde ends a storybook career having started in the previous 70 games. A four year starter, he was named to the 2014 C-USA Freshman team and the 2016 C-USA Second team. He is set to graduate in December with a degree in marketing management.
Sullivan, a fixture in the lineup for the previous three seasons, ends his career having played in 46 games. The midfielder netted two career goals including the game winner over Gardner Webb in 2015 with his second coming this season against Georgia Southern. Sullivan is set to graduate in the spring with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Stroupe, who's impact stretches beyond the soccer field, closes his career on the Southside having appeared in 49 games while making a career high nine starts this season. The Birmingham native is set to graduate in the spring with a degree in information systems.
Scarbrough, who made his season appearance tonight, will end his career with 39 appearances. His was tabbed the 2014 Team's Most Improved Player and will graduate in the spring with a 3.85 GPA and degree in Spanish.
"It's really hard to have the senior go out on a down note but these five guys have worked so hard, Getman said. "They have established how our team plays, how hard we work every day in practice, how hard we work on gamedays and the way we stick together as a team in the good times and the bad. They've been great leaders and great representatives of our university and I could not be more proud of them."
