BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team secured an unbeaten non-conference home season when it battled Lipscomb to a 1-1 double overtime tie Tuesday night at BBVA Compass Field. The Blazers move to 5-5-4 this season while the Bisons go to 9-6-1.
"We played unbelievably well in the first half, it was maybe our best half of soccer this season," head coach Mike Getman said. "The second half we were still really good but it was a really tough soccer game with two good teams going at it."
After entering the halftime break scoreless it was UAB's Aidan O'Hara who struck first in the 57th minute when he headed in a cross from Chase Rushing to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead. For O'Hara it was his second career goal and Rushing's first career assist.
Lipscomb netted the equalizer, and final goal of the match, when Eduardo Reza found the back of the net in the 61st minute to make the game 1-1. Ben Locke was credited with the assist, his second of the season, while Reza tallied his second goal of the year.
UAB's final chance at the game winner came in the 98th minute when Philip Makinde sailed a shot high over the crossbar leaving the game tied at one.
"I was pleased with our effort and the way we played but I was a little disappointed with the final result," Getman said. "We've had a few ties this year and each one I thought we deserved to win. There are always some things to work on and get better at but overall we are still making progress."
The Blazers went undefeated in non-conference home action for the first time since 2014. Tonight's 1-1 tie also marked the fourth draw at BBVA Compass Field this year setting the school record for most home ties in a single season.
Massimo Ferrin led UAB in shots with four while Makinde, Tarnue Tyler and O'Hara each contributed three.
In goal, the Blazers' James Teal played the entire match picking up two saves while the Bisons' Christopher Zappia tallied eight.
UAB wraps up the 2017 season with two crucial Conference USA matches at Marshall and then returning home to host South Carolina for Senior Night. The Blazers and Thundering Herd are scheduled for Saturday Oct. 28 with kickoff at 6:30 P.M. CT from Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
"The next two games are huge. First we have to win our way into the conference tournament and then we want to be as far up the ladder as we can be in the league standings. With two games left they are both unbelievably important. But this next one, on the road, at Marshall is a tough place to play against a good team and it is as big as of a game as there can be," Getman said.
