Blazers Knock Off Blue Raiders 3-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team improved to 11-14, 4-5 C-USA and completed the season sweep of Middle Tennessee with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18) win Sunday at Bartow Arena.
Gabby Deshotel turned in a strong performance for the Green and Gold with 10 kills, 14 digs and two blocks. She now has five double-doubles on the season.
Seniors Petra Silic and Haley Jared also had strong games. Silic had a team high 11 kills and five total blocks. Jared tallied 10 kills with seven digs and had a team high three service aces. Emily Martinez chipped in with 14 digs, one assist and one service ace.
Freshman Shelby Holderfield led the Blazers with 36 assists and earned four digs and a service ace.
UAB cruised through the first set winning it handily 25-14. The Blazer offense hit at .471 percent and only committed two attack errors in the opening set. Middle Tennessee struggled to find any rhythm, committing seven errors.
The second set was tighter as the Blue Raiders kept the score close for most of the set and only trailed 19-18 late. The Blazers however, finished the second set on a 5-2 run to win 25-20. Errors in the third set cost UAB who committed five attack errors but had five reception errors.
Middle Tennessee (6-18, 2-8) won the third set on the strength of its service line as it scored five aces and took the set 25-19.
UAB bounced back in the fourth and had a .444 hitting percentage with just two attack errors. The Green and Gold also tallied three service aces, two from Jared and one from Victoria Young. the Blue Raiders struggled to find its offense in the fourth set and hit just .167 with six attack errors.
The Green and Gold took the fourth set 25-18 and won the match 3-1.
UAB hits the road for its next two conference games and will play at UTSA on Friday, Oct. 27 going to Western Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 29. The match Friday will start at 6 p.m. CT with the first serve on Sunday coming at 12 p.m. CT.
