UAB Loses High Scoring Match on the Road

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking, high scoring affair on the road at UTSA 3-2 (25-21, 28-26, 27-29, 20-25, 14-16) Friday night at the Convocation Center.
The Blazers (11-15, 4-6 C-USA) had monster performances from Gabby Deshotel, Petra Silic, Haley Jared, Emily Martinez and Shelby Holderfield. Jared, Deshotel and Holderfield all tallied double-doubles in the high scoring match.
Jared earned her ninth double-double with 16 kills and 19 digs that set a new season high in digs. Deshotel got her sixth double-double by scoring 20 kills and 10 digs. Holderfield scored her third double-double and set new career high in assists with 60 and digs with 13.
\Silic totaled a season high 18 kills and added four blocks on the night. Martinez also set a new season high with 31 digs against UTSA. The Green and Gold had it going from the service line as well as Victoria
Young fired home four aces while Deshotel and Holderfield each added two.
However, even with all the offense firepower put forward by the Blazers, UTSA was able to answer and stay in the match. UAB had three girls with double-digit kills but UTSA was able to get four girls into double-digits.
The Roadrunners (8-13, 6-3) hit .217 percent on the night and only committed 29 attack errors through the five sets. They also scored five service aces and blocked 11 UAB attack attempts. UTSA squeezed out just one more dig than UAB totaling 89 in the match.
It was an evenly matched back-and-forth battle throughout the night as UAB took the first two sets 25-21 and 28-26. After the break, UTSA came storming back winning the third and fourth sets 29-27 and 25-20.
The match ended in heartbreak for the Blazers as they had set and match point twice but couldn't seal the victory as the Roadrunners reeled off four straight points to win the final set 16-14 and win the match 3-2.
UAB will play again Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. against conference leader WKU.
