BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team plays the first of its two non-conference games this week when it travels to Atlanta Tuesday night to take on Georgia State. Kickoff between the Blazers and Panthers is slated for 6 p.m. CT from the GSU Soccer Complex.
UAB (2-3-3, 0-3-1 C-USA) is coming off of a 1-1 double overtime tie against Charlotte on Saturday night. Senior Rami Dajani netted the Blazers lone goal in the 21st minute but Charlotte answered with the equalizer two minutes later to bring the game to its final score.
After a slow start to the season, Dajani has now scored in the Blazers' last two matches. He has tallied 16 goals in his career and needs five more to break into the top-10 career goals in program history.
Sophomore Massimo Ferrin has been the offensive leader for UAB this season as he leads the team in goals (3) and points (7).
Freshman James Teal has led the defense for the Blazers. Among freshmen keepers in the NCAA he ranks sixth in save percentage (.771), seventh in goals against average (0.93), is tied for 10th in shutouts (3) and 14th in saves per game (3.4).
Georgia State enters Tuesday's contest with a 6-4 overall record and has yet to start Sun Belt Conference play. The Panthers' last outing was a 2-1 loss at Jacksonville, a team the Blazers defeated 2-1 on the road earlier in the season.
Rashid Alarape leads the Panthers' offense with six goals and ranks 30th in the country in that category. The dominant forward has totaled 12 points on the season, good for the second most by a player in the Sun Belt.
Yannic Horn has been a mainstay in the Georgia State net this season playing all 934 minutes. Hi four shutouts is good for the 26th most by a player in the NCAA this season. In addition he leads the Sun Belt in goals against average (.768), save percentage (.789) and shutouts per game (.400).
UAB and Georgia State first met in the Blazers' inaugural season in 1979 with the Panthers taking the first matchup. While Georgia State leads the series 11-8-1, UAB has gone unbeaten in the previous eight matches. The two squads last met Sept. 11, 2011 in a match that ended in a 1-1 double overtime tie.
