SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Caroline Kehrer scored the game-winning goal and the UAB women's soccer team returned to its winning ways with a 3-1 victory over UTSA Sunday afternoon in Conference USA action.
"We had to respond from Friday and we did that with a hard-fought win today," Kehrer said. "It was nice to score and help the team secure the win."
Rachel Green started the scoring for the Blazers in the eighth minute when she registered her seventh goal of the season. Regan Kommor and Jessica Do each picked up an assist on the play as their consecutive passes allowed Green to sneak a shot off UTSA keeper Michelle Cole and into the back of the net.
"It was really important to come out strong in this game, get some early goals and grind out a win," Green said. "We definitely didn't want to leave this weekend without three points, and I'm really proud of the fight we showed all weekend."
Kehrer put UAB ahead 2-0 eight minutes later with her fifth goal of the season, using a pass from Megan Hudgens to beat Cole with a shot into the left corner of the goal. Hudgens now leads UAB with five assists and ranks second on the team with 19 points.
UTSA used a goal form Marianne Hernandez in the 28th minute to cut the UAB lead in half. Hernandez tallied her first goal of the season with a quick shot inside the Blazer box after a free kick was sent in.
UAB (10-2-3, 4-1-1) added an insurance goal midway through the second half on Hudgens' seventh goal of the season. Sophomore defender Melissa Cameron dribbled up the center of the field and played a through ball to a streaking Hudgens for a left-footed shot past Cole.
"We challenged our team to respond today and I thought we showed moments of areas that we wanted to be better in," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "One area we wanted to improve in was being more disruptive in and around the 12. For the first 20 minutes, we did this by scoring two quick goals, but we need to find a way to put a full game together. We did find a win and that was needed after our loss on Friday."
UAB returns to the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers welcome Southern Miss to BBVA Compass Field to begin a four-match homestand.
