Blazers Host Western Kentucky and Rice

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team returns home this weekend to host Western Kentucky on Friday at 7 p.m. and Rice on Sunday at 1 p.m.
UAB (9-12, 3-3 C-USA) is coming off a tough weekend which saw them drop matches on the road at North Texas and Louisiana Tech. The Blazers fell to North Texas in straight sets and lost to Louisiana Tech in four.
Gabby Deshotel led UAB last weekend with 23 kills, she had 14 against North Texas and nine against Louisiana Tech. Redshirt freshman Emma Mitchell also had a big weekend with five kills against North Texas and six versus Louisiana Tech.
Freshman Shelby Holderfield broke past the 300 assists barrier over the weekend as well. Holderfield had 31 assists in the match against North Texas and 35 against Louisiana Tech. She now has 351 on the year.
Western Kentucky (19-2, 5-0) sits at the top of the conference standings and has won the last three C-USA regular season and tournament championships. Alyssa Cavanaugh leads WKU with 296 kills and averages 4.17 kills per set.
Rachel Anderson is second on the team with 252 kills. She has a hitting percentage of .434. Cavanaugh is hitting at a .390 clip. The Hilltoppers as a team have a .346 hitting percentage.
Rice (14-5, 4-1) sits third in the conference and the Owls are on a four game winning streak going into the weekend.
The Owls have five players with over 100 kills this season and one girl, Nicole Lennon, who has 276 kills. Grace Morgan is close to 200 kills as she has 195. Madison McDaniel leads Rice with 575 assists and Adria Martinez is second with 253.
