UAB Falls To Western Kentucky In Straight Sets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team fell to Western Kentucky in straight sets (16-25, 13-25, 18-25) Friday night in Bartow Arena.
The Blazers (9-13, 3-4) struggled with errors all night finishing with 28 attack errors and nine service errors. A few bright spots for UAB was the play of senior Petra Silic. She racked up eight kills, three blocks and two digs.
Also, redshirt freshman Emma Mitchell continued her strong play of late as she tallied six kills and five digs. Shelby Holderfield led the Green and Gold with 27 assists while Emily Martinez had a team high 14 digs.
Western Kentucky (20-2, 6-0) was solid all night and cruised through set winning the first 25-16, the second set 25-13 and wrapping up the match in the third with a score of 25-18. Alyssa Cavanaugh and Taylor Dellinger tied for a team high nine kills for the Hilltoppers.
Jessica Lucas had 21 assists, leading Western Kentucky, while Sydney Engle led WKU with nine digs.
UAB will return home on Sunday, Oct. 15 as it takes on the Rice Owls. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
