IRVING, Texas – On the heels of a 1-0 shutout of UTEP on Sunday, UAB sophomore keeper Kelsey Daugherty was selected as the Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Daugherty made four saves and halted a UTEP offense that had scored at least two goals in five of its first 10 games prior to Sunday’s match at BBVA Compass Field. In addition, it’s only the fifth time in the last 32 games that a keeper has shutout the Miners.
“It was really exciting to get a shutout yesterday, because all week we have been working on winning our defensive battles,” Daugherty said. “It was nice to see the work pay off and our results are much different than last year because of it.”
Daugherty, who is the first Blazer to be named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week since Angie Jimenez in 2014, continued a hot stretch at home that has seen her allow just two goals and post a 4-0-0 record over the previous four games at BBVA Compass Field. The Kennesaw, Ga., native enters the week fifth in the league with 4.89 saves per game and sixth with 44 total saves.
“Kelsey has been our anchor in the back all season, regardless of the result,” UAB head coach Harold Warren said. “She is one of the best in the league, if not the best, and it doesn’t surprise me at all that she won this award.”
UAB returns to the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host FIU.
