BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against Old Dominion on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Field. The Blazers dominated the game in scoring chances but were unable to net a goal as their record now stands at 3-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in Conference USA. The Monarchs now sit at 3-2-2 on the year and 0-1-1 in C-USA.
This was the first positive result for UAB against Old Dominion in school history. The Monarchs had won the previous seven meetings between the two schools.
UAB opened the game with multiple opportunities to score in the beginning of the first half. The best chance came in the 23rd minute when defender William White worked his way up field and was able to get a quality shot on goal that was saved. Forward Massimo Ferrin followed up on the rebound and drilled a shot wide. The Blazers finished with nine first half shots at the break compared to four for ODU.
Defender James Ngoe, following his second career goal against Marshall last week, nearly scored after a brilliant series of moves in the 53rd minute. The Bradford, England, native caused two Monarch defenders to hit the dirt after a series of jukes that left him one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The ODU goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen did just enough to get a hand on it and keep the clean sheet.
The Blazers fired off 14 shots by the 60th minute but their pace slowed after that. The best scoring chance came the way of the Monarchs in the final 30 minutes of regulation. Jesse Miralrio ripped a shot in the 83rd minute that was aimed for the upper left corner but UAB netminder Joe Kuzminsky got his right hand to the ball and prevented a goal.
The first overtime period came and went with no shots from either side. Both teams had glimpses of taking the victory in the final overtime period. UAB’s Chase Rushing had his shot in front of the net deflected by an Old Dominion defender over the net and then Sebastian Hauret hit a firecracker off the post in the 105th minute. The game would come to a scoreless draw shortly after.
This was UAB’s second straight shutout. The Blazers are outscoring opponents 5-2 over their last five games (2-1-2).
Ferrin led the game with six shots and was consistently involved in the attack for the Blazers.
UAB closes out its stretch of five straight home games with a Tuesday meeting against Howard on September 27 at 7 p.m.
