BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod announced Wednesday that UAB junior outfielder JoJo Fallen is one of 14 student-athletes to be named a Spring Spirit of Service Award winner.
The C-USA Sprit of Service Award is designated to recognize the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sports. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with Wednesday’s honoree representing Conference USA’s spring sports: baseball, golf, women’s rowing, softball, tennis and outdoor track and field.
When she’s not tracking fly balls in left field, Fallen excels in the classroom with three consecutive appearances on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and back-to-back C-USA All-Academic Team selections. A civil engineering major, Fallen is interning this summer at Southern Nuclear.
“It is a great honor to have JoJo representing UAB for the Spring Spirit of Service Award,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “Her discipline and time management skills allow her to serve our community relentlessly, while balancing her academic demands. JoJo is the epitome of what it means to give back to her community as a UAB student-athlete.”
Helping to lead UAB to the Conference USA Championship game for the first time since the 2002 season, Fallen recorded a standout junior season with a .352 batting average with 31 runs scored. The Prattville, Alabama, native drove home 27 RBIs, slugged three home runs and a team-leading 14 doubles, turning in a .506 slugging percentage. Her efforts landed Fallen on the 2016 NFCA Mideast All-Region Third Team.
When not in the classroom, Fallen spends her time as a positive role model for others, serving local community organizations such as Ronald McDonald House, United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham and Glen Iris Elementary for Dr. Seuss Day of Reading with young children.
“JoJo has been a model student-athlete at UAB and a leader among our student-athletes in the area of service,” Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development Justin Mackey said. “She is an integral part of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. We are proud of her being recognized for her efforts.”
