BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team closes its nonconference slate Tuesday in a rescheduled contest against Lipscomb at Draper Diamond.
First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT. Fans can follow along with Tuesday’s action with live stats available at LipscombSports.com.
UAB leads the all-time series against the Lady Bison, 11-6, having won six of the last eight meetings. The Blazers are making their first trek to Nashville since the 2014 season, when UAB split a doubleheader at Draper Diamond.
Despite dropping just their second conference series of the season to UTSA, 2-1, the Blazers clinched a spot in the 2016 Conference USA Championship in Denton, Texas.
Senior Caitlin Attfield continues to lead the Blazers at the plate with a .367 average, seventh-highest in the conference, and a .444 on-base percentage, 11th-best in the league. The shortstop also ranks fifth in C-USA with her team-leading 61 hits.
Attfield also leads the conference and ranks 10th in the nation as the toughest player to strike out, recording just four strikeouts in 166 at-bats. The Niagara Falls, New York, native is coming off a record-breaking week as she shattered her seventh UAB program record with her 734th career at-bat.
Junior Mary Warren has slugged her way to a breakout season in the cleanup spot in the Blazer order. The designated player ranks third on the team with a .339 average and leads the Blazers with a .617 slugging percentage, eighth-highest in the conference.
Warren has driven in 31 RBIs this season and has homered a team-leading 10 times, just four shy of tying UAB’s single-season record of 14.
UAB’s defense continues to impress as one of the top in the country. The Blazers rank ninth in the nation with a .975 fielding percentage and have turned 21 double plays this season.
In the circle, UAB is anchored by Cara Goodwin’s 3.39 ERA and 13-9 record. The junior has made 36 appearances this season with 13 complete games and one shutout to her credit. Ranking sixth in the conference, Goodwin has struck out 116 batters this season.
Having enjoyed the weekend off, Lipscomb enters Tuesday’s contest after a 10-1 run-rule victory over Tennessee State on April 26.
Brittany Elmore leads Lipscomb with a .386 clip at the plate with 33 runs scored and 17 RBIs. Caitlin Plocheck had driven in a team-leading 33 RBIs on a .493 slugging percentage and has homered eight times this season.
Kelly Young tops the Lady Bison pitching staff with a 3.04 ERA and a 12-9 record. Young has tossed 11 complete games and three shutouts this season, while striking out a team-high 190 batters.
