Blazers Drop Heartbreaker to Memphis on Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 match to Memphis on Friday at the George Ward Tennis Center on Senior Day.
After going neck and neck with the Tigers, Sophie Dodds knotted the match at 3-all with a gritty three-set victory on court four for the Blazers.
It all came down to court three, where Pardis Kianoush and Hanna Sohn battled back and forth for every point. After dropping the first set, Kianoush topped Sohn in the second to force a third. Kianoush mustered a comeback to take a 6-5 lead, but was unable to hold off Sohn as she won, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6, in the third.
In doubles action, UAB opened up play with a 1-0 advantage after the Tigers could not field a team. Catherine Ragon and Reghan Lynch dropped a 6-4 decision on court two; but Kianoush and Elaine Simon secured the Blazers’ lead, 1-0, with a 6-3 mark in the top seed.
To open singles play, a win by Amy Lowther on court six due to no opponent allowed the Blazers to own a 2-0 lead.
Three straight wins by Memphis allowed the Tigers to claim a 3-2 lead in the match, while courts four and one headed into their third sets.
Dodds, after falling to Janina Berres, mounted a comeback as she won back-to-back sets to knot the match up at 3-all.
On court one, Kianoush and Sohn were going toe to toe as their match was tied at 6-all in the third set. In the tiebreak, Sohn claimed an early 6-2 lead, which was enough to outlast Kianoush and earn the 4-3 win.
