BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team returns to Mary Bowers Field for just the second time this season as the Blazers welcome in-state foe Troy for a midweek contest Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Fans unable to attend can keep up with the action with live stats and live streaming available at UABSports.com.
Tuesday’s contest marks the fourth in-state opponent UAB has faced in the early stages of the 2016 season and is the 26th meeting between the Blazers and the Trojans. Tuesday’s contest ends the Blazers’ streak of four consecutive weeks of facing at least one ranked opponent.
The Trojans lead the all-time series, 15-10, after the two squads split a doubleheader last season in Troy, Alabama.
The Blazers are coming off a 2-3 weekend at the Tennessee Invitational, where UAB knocked off Green Bay twice in impressive fashion, including a walk-off victory off junior Mary Warren’s solo home run in Sunday’s tournament finale.
Junior JoJo Fallen continues to lead the Blazers at the plate with a .370 average (22-for-58) and has knocked four doubles and one home run for a team-best .500 slugging percentage. The Prattville, Alabama, native also leads the Blazers with a .455 on-base percentage and 11 runs scored.
Senior Caitlin Attfield is coming off her best weekend of the season after recording 10 hits through six games for UAB to raise her average to .352. The shortstop leads the team and ranked tied for seventh in the conference with 25 hits and brings her six-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s contest.
Attfield broke her fifth UAB career record over the weekend, recording her 395th career assist to top Candice Hithe’s (2000-2003) record of 394.
After an outstanding weekend at the Tennessee Invitational, junior Cara Goodwin leads UAB in the circle. Goodwin boasts a team-best 5-2 record and 4.05 ERA over 67.2 innings pitched. The Cullman, Alabama, native has allowed just 39 walks and has struck out a team-high 57 batters, ranking fourth-best in the league.
Over the weekend, Goodwin set a career record of 13 strikeouts against Green Bay and pitched a combined eight innings without allowing a hit.
Troy enters Tuesday’s contest after a 4-1 showing at the Lipscomb Tournament with its only loss coming against the host team, 2-0. The Trojans have won eight of their last nine contests and hold a 15-5 overall record; however, Troy has lost both of its road contests this season.
Kate Benton leads the Trojans at the plate, leading the team in average (.484), on-base percentage (.536), hits (30) and runs scored (22). Hannah Day is the Trojans’ RBI leader with 25 runs driven in off 19 hits. Day has hit a team-leading seven home runs this season.
With 57.2 innings pitched, Ashley Rainey leads the Trojan pitching staff with a 3.16 ERA and an 8-5 record. Rainey has tossed two complete games with opponents batting just .268 against her. The right-hander has also struck out a team-best 24.
