BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Continuing her success on and off the field, senior shortstop Caitlin Attfield was selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award for collegiate softball.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballots. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C’s.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2016 Women’s College World Series.
Attfield is the only Conference USA representative on the list of candidates eligible for the award, and epitomizes the definition of an all-around student-athlete.
In the classroom, the senior is on pace to graduate with her degree in kinesiology/exercise science with a cumulative GPA of 3.43. Attfield has received numerous academic recognitions throughout her career, being recognized as a two-time Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll honoree and named as a C-USA All-Academic team selection in 2014 and 2015.
Though not an outspoken personality on the Blazers’ squad, “President Atty,” as she has been dubbed by her teammates, serves as the team’s undisputed team captain. She is the first to share knowledge with her teammates and has evolved into a shining example of a leader off and on the field.
Attfield and the UAB softball team are involved in numerous community service projects in the Birmingham area and have volunteered in organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Feed My Starving Children.
Via the Helper Helper app, UAB softball has volunteered more community service time than any other program that uses the tracking service.
A four-year starter, Attfield is a three-time, All-Conference selection and has been named to the NFCA All-Region First Team twice. She has also earned 2013 All-Freshman team and Freshman of the Year honors and, in 2015, was the first Blazer in UAB history to earn C-USA Player of the Year.
She has helped the Blazers notch 30 or more wins during her first three seasons, including winning the 2013 C-USA regular- season title her freshman season.
Attfield has played in two NCAA Regionals, helping UAB claim its first Regional victory in 2013.
She holds school records in batting average (.411), on-base percentage (.463), hits (248) and runs scored (120), while holding single-season records for average (.473), total bases (120), on-base percentage (.511) and hits (88).
